A Steam Meet On A Warm Summer Day At Shedd, Oregon - 1909!
Author: LoggerHogger

You can almost feel the warm summer sun on you when you look at this tranquil scene shot by H. L. Arey in 1909 at the depot at Shedd, Oregon.  Located north of Junction City on the Southern Pacific's Portland Division, Shedd saw it's share of activity back in these early days.

Here we see SP 4-6-0 #2205 starting out from the depot after a brief stop.  The baggage handler in the lead car leans out to say something to the woman standing on the ground as the engineer begins to widen on the throttle.  As this occurs the safeties lift on the big SP 2-8-0 that waits on the adjoining track for clearance once the #2205 departs.

All this takes place under the watchful eyes of the crew of the 2-8-0 who are waiting at the right of the image as they enjoy a little more sunshine as the #2205 departs before they climb back aboard the big Consolidation for the trip south.

These photos are great.  I enjoy seeing many of the Hansen collection.

Wow!  Check out the valve gear on the 2205.

Looks like the 2-8-0 has piston valves but it's not superheated.

I have family that live near Shedd. Not too much going on there these days, though the trains still roar through.

Thanks, Taylor

Note the boiler jacket on the (2600 series?) 2-8-0.  The engine positively glistens.  Probably the boiler jacket, steam dome jacket, and cylinder jackets are genuine Russian Iron, carefully wiped down daily with oily rags at the roundhouse to preserve the shiny surface.  Except for the jacket right in front of the cab, which has the chalky dull finish characteristic of slightly weathered galvanized iron.   It appears that this piece of the original Russian iron jacket was hastily replaced, probably after replacing broken staybolts.

Also worthy of note is the acetylene tank (the ~6" diameter vertical cylinder on the engineer's running board), for the headlight.

Matin, I think the fellow leaning out is in a RPO car, not baggage.

I am pretty sure the old depot was on the west side of the main line and just north of the former C Street crossing that was taken out last fall. So, the photo looks to be taken across the tracks and just north of where I live. The trees and house might be in the area south of our house.  Interesting!  Thanks for posting, Martin.

Can somebody explain the cylinder and valve gear arrangement on 2205 4-6-0?     The consolodation is looking pretty modern for 1909.

It looks like Stevens valve gear, which was designed by A.J. Stevens, the General Superintendant of the Sacramento shops during the 1880s. It was somewhat similar to Walschaerts gear. Stevens also designed the massive steam chests seen on the 10 wheeler, and the first steam powered reverse gear. He was the major promoter of his valve gear, but he died in 1888. The eastern builders didn't follow his lead and went with Walschaerts about 10 years later.
