I remember the N&W line south out of Roanoke to Winston-Salem was referred to as the "P  Vine".

When Visiting Spencer This weekend, I was told the train will go Via Danville, then Lynchburg, then into Roanoke. This if im not mistaken retraces its last run under power in 1994 correct?

See this link: http://trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/2015/04/norfolk--western-no-611-inaugural-excursion-set-for-may-30

"The 220-mile, one-way May 30 trip will see the powerful Class J stride along the former Southern Railway main line and enter home rails at Lynchburg. There, the engine will retrace its regular service route when it pulled N&W’s named passenger trains across the fabled Blue Ridge grade."

Spencer north to Lynchburg via High Point, Salisbury, Greensboro and Danville is the former Southern Railway main line.

I would expect a break in run before May 30th. What are the options in the area of spencer? Any handy Y tracks 15-20 miles away?

The J's wheelbase is too much for the curves on the pumpkinvine.Expect SR to Altivista and N&W to Roanoke.

Yes there is a wye about a mile south of NCTM and then another one about 10 miles west at Barber Jct. They turned the 630 on both of these during some mini-excursions a couple years ago.

Possibly in the modern era but don`t forget about Ike`s campaign train pulled from Winston Salem to Roanoke behind a pair of doubleheaded J`s.

Yes, but they had to do some special work on the tracks such as widening the gauge on some sharp  curves.

They are supposed to run it around the NCTM property on Thursday  May 28 for a little break in special. They are going to have some photo opportunities all day and into the evening, all for $250.00 !!  I had heard a while back that they might do something before the Big Day on May 30.  $250.00 is a little steep, but that will keep the crowds down. I would have considered it at $75>$100.  I'll wait till Saturday when the all of the FOAM is Foaming. Everyone will have to watch their step and not slip in all the Foam!!!

Does that include a "License" to use the "Likeness" of the locomotive, or is that additional money that has to be spent?
