Steam & Excursion > Flying Locomotives Spotted Today Over Fremont California!

This morning our crews at Oregon Coast Scenic RR completed the loading of Sunset Timber Heisler #1 at it's long time storage site in Fremont, CA.  Most of you here know this engine from her last operator, as Pickering Lumber Corp. #1.

Several years ago we traded some boiler work on the PLA's Sierra Ry #30 for this 85-ton Heisler.  We picked up her 3rd truck and tender a couple years ago and have it stored in Garibaldi, OR.  We will depart later this morning for the 2-day run up to Tillamook where the restoration of this Heisler will take place.

Yay!  It's great to see that the #1 is finally heading north. 

Boy, that looks like a really expensive trip back to Oregaon with that muli-tired highway heavy-haul rig.

Yes, nice rig. Haven't seen many with that rear bogie, is it self-steering?

Wow! Is that rig really required?  Looks like it could move a 4-8-4!

I remember when Pickering #1 sat on blocks in Cannery Row in Monterey, CA years ago....

She looked like this in Montery.

Gravel in the gearboxes from the Monterey time might be a problem.

Been a long since Caneery Row Looked like that.

Now worries about rocks in the gear boxes.  Most Heislers sound like rock crushers anyway...

What is the name on the truck?

The Fremont, CA location appears to be the Bus Museum on Shinning Road in Fremont. The Heisler was stored in the back weeds there as I recall.

Most are controled by remote control either from the tractor cab or from a pilot car trailing.
