Here is a shot of SP 794 in San Antonio for lovers of the SP 2-8-2s, like me. I too hope that the Austin Mike, #786 gets steamed up in the near future!

IMHO, those Harriman Mikes are some of the most aesthetically pleasing engines out there.  Can't wait to see Austin get their Mike 786 up and running again and also hope 745 in New Orleans gets to stretch her legs again one day.

I hear very little about the New Orleans Mike.  Always interested in updates.  Likewise the Austin Mike, wish they posted updates and progress reports like the folks in Albuquerque do.

Go to their website www.austinsteamtrain.org for more information on T&NO 786.

Their photo gallery for 786's second rebuild can be found here:   http://pointech.com/786/

On the website it says that the boiler is complete and passed hydrotest November 23, 2009.  Doesn't that mean that the 15 year clock is already ticking?
I thought that restorations hold off installing the tubes until almost the end because once they are installed and hydroed then the 15 year clock starts.

Yep, that is my understanding.  I helped restore 786 the first time and was part of the breaking crew as well as being part of the crew the part season of operations.  Then it all when down hill from there.
It was fun while it lasted.
Also last year I inquired about the status update on geting it back into operations.  Probably 2016 or so.  Also they don't intend to use it very much once back in opeations, which does not make any sense to me.
I guess that is why I am no longer assocated with the organization.
Who the heck knows.

I think the last big hurdle they have to get over are new driving boxes.

They always need money and volunteers too!

Ricky, some if not all of the new journal box castings are at the Strasburg awaiting machining as we speak.  That is promising news.  Once the boxes are done and the crown brasses installed and machined, I would think they would be able to start reassembling the chassis and running gear.
