A little more progress on Medco No. 4
Author: TonyJ

With 75 elementary school kids and 20 adults having a wonderful time at the Medford Railroad Park, Jerry Hellinga, assisted by Bill Ainsworth and Matt Starman took inspected the bearings and rods on Medco No. 4 (Willamette, 1925) this morning. This was the first time it was inspected since the locomotive was retired in 1959 and placed on display in nearby Jackson Park. To their relief the bearings and rods look great. The cylinders slid up and down easily as they looked at the bearings. The next question is how good the main bearing will be when they look at it. (Maybe next week.) But if it is a good as what we saw today, it's great news.

Photos #1 and 2 - Jerry placing a jack under a bearing for the first lift.

Photo #3 - Jerry holds it in place as Matt looks for a 4x4 block of wood to keep the cylinder in place. Jerry discusses the plan with Art Turner.

Serious good news!  Please keep us informed of the progress. Great looking locomotive, and it sounds like it's in good shape.

Thanks, Tony!

not sure if it's the way the tanks are formed, but, she looks like she'll be a beast when completed.

Looks like she's really coming together.  It will be great to have two Willamettes operational in the Pacific Northwest.
