N&W 1218 NS Steam Special 1989
Author: RFandPFan

Here is a video I shot of N&W #1218 pulling an excursion train from Alexandria to Front Royal and back on the NS "B" line.  Footage inside the cab was while it was parked in Front Royal and the cab was opened to the public.

I have some great on board video from that trip.  Spent most of that trip hanging our the door focusing on those double sets of drivers as we went around curves.   The B line is good for that.   I need to find how to digitize my VHS.    Thanks for posting.   Nice camera work and editing.

I use this device.  I purchased at B&H Photo for $48.00.  Very simple to use, but you will need plenty of storage space.  I have a 4 and 5TB external hard drive.  A 2 hour VHS tape takes around 132GB.

me too.  I was in college at the time and not able to travel to see this.  I never once got to see this beautiful machine in person - alive that is.
Funny thing is that my dad has a picture of me in front of this locomotive in the early 80's before it's resurrection at the museum in VA.   Thanks for the video.

Lawdy Lawdy Lawdy, what a beautiful machine!    I agree with CPRR...not a diesel in sight, that old girl was holdin her own and doing a fine job of it.  Your video made my day, thanks for posting.

I was in Greensboro, NC during the summer of1989. 1218 payed a call to haul railfans arounnd the state.

On Friday afternoon,  the day she came in, I went out to the Pomana siding -- the then location of the Amtrak station -- and there she was. I was in awe.

Next morning when she got underway -- a diesel in tow right behind the tenders -- I chased her around for most of the morning.

What a rush... because she's a compound, she doesn't sound quite like you'd expect her to.

She was built by the N&W Roanoke shop in 1943 to haul coal.

If that was her whistle back then, I can just imagine how she would've sounded making her way up a grade at night with a long coal drag behind her. The echos off the hillsides  would,ve been haunting.

You might want to check your sources, she is not a compound, but a simple articulated. Her bigger brother the 2156 is indeed a compound though.
