Tillamook Heisler unload, April 23 2015
Author: Jeff_Johnston

The Sunset Timber Heisler #85 was recently moved to the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad shops in Tillamook, Oregon. The unloading project took place on a rainy April 23, and the crews did their usual fine job with the effort.

That's not just any C-97, tha's a highly modified one called a Guppy. It was used to transport parts of the Apollo Saturn V rocket, among other things.

Nice video. I've unloaded a Thomas the Tank engine pretty much the exact same way. The exception being that the trailer had a built in winch. The second time I unloaded a Thomas the Tank engine, we gave it a gentle tug with a back hoe and I rode the handbrake down.

And its worth a tour to look at exactly how it was done. Kind of quick and dirty on might say but it worked.  Why was the engine unloaded there? Know that most of the aircraft are gone from the hangar now are they going to us part of it?

The engine was unloaded at the blimp hangar since there is a large concrete area where a long truck can turn around and the tracks are flush with the tarmac allowing an easy time for the driver to line the truck up with the tracks.

Since the railroad is now landlocked, perhaps a permanent loading/unloading ramp should be considered.

The U joints are still OK, but beat the heck out of the axles on the way down the ramp.  You guys are doing great things at OCSR.  Did I see Scott Gordon in the beginning of the video?

Would have been nice to have that long drive shaft roped or chained up so that it wasn't banging around. But I was looking at the axle as best I could on the video and it seems like any dents are superficial.

Yes Jim, that's me in the video. And no, there was no damage.
