Look like that tractor has a small block chevy in it and I'm sure it doesn't make 850hp. John Deere builds their own diesel engines.

That's a lot of weight for the modern and lighter John Deere to try to drag around. No surprise the classic John Deere did what it did

First of all think about "weight on drivers". It would be tough to drag around a steam tractor if it didn't want to move. Also think about the gearing. The Deere is "modified" - as for use in tractor pulls. I don't know what they do with the transmission, but they seem to be designed to get a light weight going fast quickly and then try to keep it moving  as the weight on the sled moves forward. In this case the situation is as if the tractor pull sled already had the weight all the way forward. Finally think about the gearing. That Deere (in it's modified state) could probably run at 60 mph (I'm guessing), the steam traction engine will top out at 2 - 3 mph.  Maybe an apt railroad comparison would be have this same contest between a 4-6-4 and a large Shay.

Here is yours truly embarrassing the diesel competitors at a recent tractor pull. We were scoffed at because our tractor only had 80hp. What they didn't realize is that we had close to 4000ft/lbs of torque to back it up.

We put our half size case in an antique tractor pull and in the appropriate weight class once.  When I registered it they asked the horse power, I just said 16.  They smiled and laughed under their breath.  We kicked the crap out of them at that weight class.  :)  Will try to find a video of a pull

With the parts available in today's performance after-market, making 850 HP with a SBC is no problem whatsoever......
