Enjoy, Marty Bernard Date: 05/22/15 13:21 Re: 5632 at Highlands Author: HotWater What great views of a truly wonderful locomotive. That 5632 had to be the absolute LOUDEST steam locomotive I have ever been around, been on, or worked on! Sure wish we all had a Q O5b in operation today.

Have you heard the recording of 5632 blasting out of Lincoln, Nebraska, on the Semaphore LP "Modern Steam?" That is one of the best audio sequences I have ever heard, and it certainly backs up your claim! Mary, I'm pretty sure that I have that album, and if the trip was in May or June of 1964, I may very well have been on the engine. Date: 05/22/15 17:50 Re: 5632 at Highlands Author: UP3806 Rode right behind the '32 in an open gondola as we accelerated south out of East Dubuque along the palisades on the way back to Chicago. Absolutely the loudest sound I have ever heard. Its amazing that I have any hearing left!
Tom Date: 05/22/15 20:57 Re: 5632 at Highlands Author: IC_2024 I never saw 5632 in action so won't dispute its "loudest engine" claim but remember riding behind 2101 when she was working as the Chessie Steam special loco on a ferry move from Chicago- Cincinnati. We did a runby near Peru and she thundered by with an absolutely deafening exhaust-- the loudest engine I've ever heard for sure! Sure would've loved to see 5632, but was born too late.

Thanks , Marty. Date: 05/23/15 08:54 Re: 5632 at Highlands Author: coach Can someone explain the signals to me? What are the smaller ones on top for?
Also, I find interesting how older right-of-ways often had less ballast, and the wooden ties appear to be only half-buried in rock. Less weight of trains, thus less need for ballast? I hear they're closing and tearing down the old one lane bridge over the tracks that was the back drop for so many Highlands photos. Date: 05/23/15 15:41 Re: 5632 at Highlands Author: HotWater onequiknova Wrote:

The "plan" is in the works, but nothing has been done yet, mainly since the "plan" involves purchasing the house on the southwest side of the bridge. The pedestrian walk portion of the Oak Street bridge has been closed for quite some years, since it was deemed unsafe. I think the price of the new bridge is upwards of 10 million dollars now.
