Steam & Excursion > UP 3985 Mystery MenDate: 05/22/15 13:29 UP 3985 Mystery Men Author: donstrack Here is a UP photo from Dean Gray's collection, UP negative 66361-20. It may have been taken when the rebuild of 3985 was just recently completed in early 1981.
The first photo is a detail of the three gentlemen, and the second is the entire photo. Can someone identify them. Don Strack Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/22/15 13:30 by donstrack. Date: 05/22/15 13:33 Re: UP 3985 Mystery Men Author: HotWater Looks like Art Lockman, in the middle.
Date: 05/22/15 14:09 Re: UP 3985 Mystery Men Author: Bob3985 Those men were the mechanical men in Cheyenne when we finished the 3985. Left to right are Bob Marquardt (District Locomotive foreman), Art Lockman (Roundhouse Foreman), and Jim Duncan (Assistant District Foreman Locomotives).

JB Date: 05/22/15 15:03 Re: UP 3985 Mystery Men Author: Margaret_SP_fan Man -- that goes back a few years! We -- my family and I --
chased and rode the 8444 in 1978, 1979, 1980, and both locomotives in 1981, and the 3985 in 1982. I well remember Jim Duncan and Bob Marquardt as being part of the crew back t hen -- the Frank Acord era. (I don’t remember Art Lockman.) I remember one time long ago asking the now sadly late Jim Duncan if I could ride in the cab of the 8444, and he said, “If we let one in, we have to let them all in, so we draw the line REAL early.” He was SO NICE about it that it was almost a pleasure being turned down! What a really NICE bunch of guys that old crew was! And so were Steve Lee and his crew. Thanks for posting that great photo. Brings back lots of good memories. Date: 05/22/15 15:33 Margaret Author: Bob3985 Back in the Acord days, Frank ran the locomotives except on the double header to California in 81, Tom Stuart was the 3985 engineer. Jim Duncan, Jim Chval and Jim Fitzpatrick ( and one other who's name escapes me, Mark ?) were the firemen. A number of us from the 3985 restoration committee got to travel along to service the locomotives and we lived in the snow plow diner bunk. We had Herb Porter and Peewee as kitchen cooks off the Cheyenne derrick.

Date: 05/22/15 15:42 Re: Margaret Author: donstrack It was Bob Marquardt that interviewed me for the boilermaker job in 1980. He was really impressed with my knowledge of steam locomotives (actually steam derricks), and the fact that I flew from here in Utah, to Denver ($26.00 Peanuts flight), and drove up to Cheyenne to see about the job. He wrote a nice letter about a week later saying he wanted me for the job, but there was a furloughed boilermaker in North Platte that had rights to the position. <sigh>

Steve Date: 05/22/15 17:30 Re: Margaret Author: Bob3985 When I came to Cheyenne in 1976 all of the roundhouse was still standing except 7 of the South west stalls. And it was there until in the mid 80's when they had a small fire start and Omaha decided it was too much to fix it back up so everything but what remains came down.

I used to leave a copy there to try to get more members but found out from Dick the barber that Art would take them home.He was a good speaker at one of our Cheyenne Conventions too. If you run into him again ask him what the Alco diesels sounded like. Bob Krieger Cheyenne, WY |
