Opening day on the east side of the CT&S and the SLRG
Author: drgw0579

On Saturday May 23, 463 led the C&TS train out of Antonito.  I was going to chase it to Osier, but with the road a bit muddy, I tried something just outside of Antonito.

Hading home, I happened to be going through La Veta when the San Luis and Rio Grande was leaving town and found they were running a mixed train, 2 passenger cars and 40 freight cars hauled by 3 ex-LMX units pretending to be steam engines.

Bill, love the second shot, that train often doesn't run in day time. As to the first shot, train
got bigger by the time it hit Chama, not sure what went on there.

SLRG probably had some extra tonnage to get over the hill, so they ran a mixed train.  I'd have thought they would have painted all the ATSF domes by now, that one is still in Westours Paint.

They've some a long way since #18 made a hard run at the 3% grade at that crossing with a matched 5 car heavywieght consist (including the Lookout Mountain).
