Amazing How The Shape Of The Water Tanks Match Each Other!
Author: LoggerHogger

Here is a fun contrast demonstrated by the 2 photos attached.

In both views we see logging tank engines taking water at track side water tanks.  In the first view we see the square side tanks of MacMillan Bloedel #1066 being filled at Chemainus in March 1959 from an equally square wooden water tank.

Our second view shows the curved saddle tanks of Coos Bay Lumber Co. 2-8-2 #9 being filled from an equally curved round wooden tank in the yards at Powers Oregon in the 1950's.

One would almost think there was a rule in the woods that square tank logging lokies had to be filled from square water tanks and round saddle tank lokies were to be filled only from round water tanks.

Yes, square water fills up the space better than round water.

Interesting that number 9 has class lights on a logging railroad.

#9 had the class lights because Coos Bay Lumber Co. had trackage rights on the SP Powers Branch between Powers and the log dump at Coos Bay.

Could be the shape of the water into a like shaped tank fits better. LOL Oh well the best I could come up with today.
The thing I take from the diffrent tanks is ease of building them. I would think a round tank with all of the bands and such
would be much harder to build than a squair or rectangle one. Either way provides some welcome change in them.

Yes, but only after you stomp and pack the water down with your foot first.

Nice photos, and notice that the #9 has a CM&StPRy style class lamp on the engineers side and something else on the other.  I have some of those.

Maybe they are measuring the water like my water meter at home, in cubic feet?

Is it just me, or do they both look like they have "low tires?"   Nice shots, Martin.
