Emergency stop............
Author: engine3420

This was a June 1 2008 trip to San Diego....on the return trip I stopped at a rest stop, it was getting dark and I didn't have much hope of getting a picture here.  But as luck would have it, something caused the excursion to go into emergency and it stopped right in front of me.  The poor fireman I assume was caught by surprise and got a little behind and as you can see in the 3rd photo some of the burning oil got on the ground.

I wouldn't think so, back in 2008.

Been there, done that. Running hard, steam on the peg, pops feathering, water when you want it...then THAT happens. If the engineer lets 'er drag to a stop, you can keep adjusting down your atomizer and firing valve, the cracking your blower when you are almost stopped. If he just shuts er off, the pops lift, boiling smoke ( till you cut the fire back ) , then crack your blower to keep the smoke out the cab until you get the fire spotted..oh, and get the injector on to get your water back. Fun times....

And they would be happy to have him back? Oh brother!

Is that the fire falling on the ties? How does that happen?

(Not being a smart ass, just genuinely interested in what's going on there)

WAY too much oil and too little atomizer.  It's drooling.

We called it "puddling her pan"....If not caught it makes for a pretty interesting fire underneath you...

Well, I stand corrected. I have been informed that ED was indeed at the throttle, and Bill Stetler was Fireman. However, I am not at liberty to divulge exactly what happened and why.

I don't think I would have admitted who was at the throttle considering the name and these days.   : )

Unless he cuased the issue, which either people don't know or can't say, then it doesn't really matter that he was the engineer. Not every thread has to be derailed into more complaints about Ed. The horse is dead - stop beating the horse.

Well, for one; he DID cause the issue, and two, the horse is very definitely NOT DEAD, as of yet anyway.

That's good to know he was at fault, but you're still not allowed to say what he did, right?

Were the drivers still round when it stopped?

Okay, serious question about Ed: I'm guessing this trip wasn't on UP trackage so if he sucks so bad why is he allowed to operate 3751? And the reason I added the part about not being on UP trackage is because then we can't pass the buck up the line to UP corporate since in theory that had nothing to do with this trip.

That is the former Santa Fe line from LA to San Diego, and it was an Amtrak passenger excursion. As to why he was "allowed to operate 3751",,,,that is the 64 thousand dollar question!

And the reason

Right. Maybe Amtrak should be asking more questions.

Probably the old crew's fault.

Or had to change the German marching music tape.

Fireman should have been cutting back the oil as it slowed.  I would have bailed off the independent and worked a little steam in case the train broke in two so the ass end didn't catch up to the head end.  Fire hadn't been cut back if it was drooling that badly and still had that much smoke.
In 1522's trip to Fon du Lac in '88 before the board changes were made, there was a guy who basically bought his way into the group and butt snorkeled (thanks GL)  the leader.  The engine was in the diesel shop for the night and he convinced our dl that he could light her off.  I had coached him the morning before in Chicago and he basically scared the crap out of people within a block when it finally lit off.  He didn't listen and in the diesel shop, he had No. 6 running out the pan, down into pit and all over the trailing truck.  When it lit, out came the fire extinguishers.  Half of that stall had fire extinguisher snot all over it, down in the pit and all over the trailing truck.   Awful mess.   Then the shop foreman showed up for work and was, as we say, not a happy camper.   Needless to say, the clown wasn't allowed anywhere near the firing valve after that.

Perhaps the brave engineer was mugging for the cameras and fell out of the cab.
