West Oakland --- "As I remember It"
Author: KeyRouteKen

Good Morning--  I ran across these seven photos buried in a box in my closet a few minutes ago--  thought you might enjoy them.  They were taken during the month
of July-1955 ...  All photos by Gary E. Meyer ...

Cheers.

#1 looks like it is being towed.

Look a bit closer. It may be towing that small Vanderbilt tender, with the Switchman riding the footboards on the forward end.

Great photos, interesting backgrounds. Also to think at that time a few miles away, the Mole was still in operation, the Ferries and the whole 9 yards, so to speak.

SP 217 was the West Oakland Roundhouse Switcher--  probably pulling an engine some place.

What is the function of the fork-shaped device hanging down beside 217's coupler in the first photo?

Maybe a "tow-bar" for moving an engine without a tender, or the tender without the engine drawbared together?

Great series, KRK.  I'm curious, what would you say were the years you hung out with your Grandpa around the Oakland facilities.  Just guessing, but I do think your photos cover a much longer time frame than your actual experience, thanks to your acquisition of  photo collections.  My own experience there, as a traveller, were 1947 - 1958, the last time I was in the Mole.  When I moved back to SF in '62, and had a car, I'd roam around the coach yards and engine facility, and did so up until I moved away in 1971.  AA
