The last Daylight 4-8-4 I shot....or so I thought
Author: PERichardson

In June 1955 I took one of my first Kodachrome slides of SP #4455 on Train 90 at Glendale, CA, a couple of blocks from my home.  As I grew up I thought that was the last time I'd ever photograph a live SP GS 4-8-4.  Little did I know I'd get another chance 20 years later, which began a 40- year and counting photographic quest of another SP GS4.  Here's my "last" and next views of these great engines.

1.  SP 4455 at Glendale, CA as detailed above.

2-3.  SP 4449 heading the American Freedom Train passes through South San Francisco on December 9, 1975 on the way to San Francisco for display.  And 25-cent parking at the station!

Doyle hasn't done the skirts off configuration yet.   I kinda like it.  Your mileage may vary.

I understand that the skirts off configuration is a non starter, because they tend to hide the anachronistic, modern equipment under them...

I say keep 'em. The locomotive that brainwashed so many of us deserves to be in her best dress.

I've never noticed any "modern equipment" under the skirts, but there sure is lots of piping and stuff that is always covered with pin-grease slung upwards under here lower jacketing and such. Simply isn't worth trying to sanitize all that.

Those GS4s were handsome locomotives in any configuration, IMHO. Looking forward to the 4449s return.

Thanks for sharing the great photos, masterphots.

Alan -  Great photo of SP 4455!!  I was only 6 when you took that one!  Great memories of you on the West Coast and me on the East Coast!!

I can't imagine how much hassle it was running the AFT 4449 without an auxiliary tender.  It would have taken tice as many water stops all over the western and southern US.

Maybe that's it then. Thanks
