Checking for signals from the brakeman or conductor. They are using a radio but also do hand signals. If he has never had any steam experience until attending this school then he has the makings for a good engineer from what I saw. I was impressed with the way he started that train. He felt the engine, worked the throttle to keep from possibly slipping, and all the time looked like he had been doing it for years.
