Steam & Excursion > 4449 at 16th & Wood, OaklandDate: 07/24/15 20:10 4449 at 16th & Wood, Oakland Author: drumwrencher Here are some pics I took on a cool, rainy day back in March, 1986, of the 4449 coming through Oakland. I dated them 3-7-1986. For some reason, the rain let up just a while before the train arrived.
If what memory serves, my friend Ahmad Khan called me a day or two beforehand, to let me know what was happening. Ahmad was more my dad's pal, having worked with him at Bayshore from, 1971, I believe. We stayed in touch off and on after my father's passing. Anyway, forgive me if I'm way off here. 1986 was a loong time ago. Enjoy Walter Sanfranciscotrains.org Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 07/24/15 20:19 by drumwrencher. The Worlds Fair Daylight ran two years before in 1984.

And yes, you are very lucky, indeed. Years ago, when we took family vacations, specifically to the north, we'd always stop by the park in Portland and pay our respects. My dad knew the old timer (?) who kept her oiled. I don't remember his name, or even if he was the only one anymore. But, nonetheless, that guy was a real hero. Walter Date: 07/24/15 21:12 Re: 4449 at 16th & Wood, Oakland Author: asheldrake Walter,
we still honor Jack Holst who was the primary 4449 oiler back in those rusty days. Chris McLarney helped him and Chris is still with us. We all agree that they performed a VERY valuable service in ensuring that when and IF the 4449 was ever brought out of the Oaks Park that it would roll and roll it did. This will be part of the story we tell in 2016 as part of the Portland AFT Story exhibit that will, we hope, open in August 2016 at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center before the 40th AFT staff reunion being held here in Portland in September. Arlen Date: 07/24/15 22:54 Re: 4449 at 16th & Wood, Oakland Author: TonyJ It is the deadhead move to southern California for the film "Tough Guys." I videotaped it going e/b on the Coast Line through Elkhorn Slough on 3/11/86.

I saw the 1986 tough guys daylight at Bekeley, CA and it ran with NO obs car. The 1986 SP 4449 to LA was very SHORT and ran with only 2 passenger cars and NO round end obs cars. IN 1986 there was a major bridge fire just north of Marysville CA on the SP East Valley line. This delayed the SP 4449 southbound special to CA by about 1 week as I remember. The SP was left with only the West Valley line for all freight traffic which is why SP 4449 was delayed waay back then. I am very certain that these photos are of the 1989 LAUPT eastbound Inbound SP 4449 Daylight enroute LAUPT. The ONLY 2 (TWO) times in the 1980s SP 4449 went east on SP coast line was 1986 and 1989. I saw the 1986 south or eastbound train at Berkeley and this is definitely NOT that pax consist. I MISSED the 1989 eastbound SP 4449 Salinas--Santa Barbara run due to choosing the inbound UP steam special. YOu had to choose one or the other inbound train to see in 1989 That is why the southbound or eastbound LAUPT 1989 train is the ONLY possibility for this photo. EVERYONE of age saw the SP 4449 ourbound move in 1989 because it was the Cajon Pass Side By side race UPHILL SP 4449, UP 8444. That Cajon Pass steam race was a very AWESOME day for sure. I did NOT see the SP 4449 eastbound train in May1989 (Salinas--Santa Barbara ==Direction). I rest my case to the best of my knowledge about what year this was taken. ----- Daniel Edited 3 time(s). I still liked the one she borrowed from 700!
