Are those locomotives still around?

Yes. However that little 4-6-0 #1243 is now on display in Omaha, at the Western Heritage Museum. The 2-10-2 #5511 and the FEF-3 #838 are still in the Cheyenne roundhouse.

Too bad nothing could be done with UP 838. I know it is missing a lot of parts now but I was told the boiler is in great condition. Think out of a 2-10-2, (2) 4-8-4s, 4-6-6-4, and a 4-8-8-4 one of them could be made to run, even with DL. On second thought let's wait for DL to go first so if any of the locomotives are returned to service they are not filled with mud like 844.

The 838 is not in near the condition you think it is, the bottom of the boiler has been cracked for years, when a part connected to the boiler or the fire box needed to be removed for the 844 it was torched out. Leaving a big hole.
The spare parts have been depleted from the 838, the current plan is when the 844 needs replacement parts there will be new parts made and the old patrs from 844 will be used piece the 838 back together to eventually be cosmetically restored for static display.
The 5511 is in pretty good shape, the biggest problem is the piston rods have been cut and it only has 63" drivers so it would be a slow mover. Before the big boy project there were tentative plans to restoring it back to operating condition.

5511 is junk. It's last use was as a stationary boiler, almost always a death sentence for a locomotive boiler.

It could not even be fired up for it's cameo appearance in Last of The Giants. In the movie it has steam in it from the boiler at the Green River roundhouse, the smokebox is half full of old tired lit with a fusee, and there are diesels pushing the whole thing and making the air for the brake system.

Plain bearings, small drivers, long rigid wheelbase, 35-40 mph (the mamaximum spped allowed by UP for 2-10-2s back in steam days) and a very small tender.

Somebody is smoking some REALLY good stuff!

Was 1243 in any decent shape when put away? I know it would've been pointless to run on a mainline only pulling maybe 4-5 cars.

I've heard it was left in Laramie full of water and it suffered major freeze damage.

Great pics Tom, and STeamsaver, I really am not happy with how things are going since most of the parts for the 844 besides the 838 as a parts source have gotten tossed probably with the rest of the manuals, etc. that DL thought were useless, so whatever about new parts, besides, the jury's still out, can't wait to see what will happen to the 844 since he thought all these "improvements" would make her better!

Yes. After it's appearance in Last of the Giants (similar to 5511, it had steam and water but no fire) it was put in the Rawlins roundhouse and never drained. Has plenty of freeze damage.

I remember hearing once that the Ten Wheeler was considered for restoration and operation on branch lines, being moved from city to city on flat cars. Is there any truth to that? A 4-6-0 isn't as impressive as anything with 4 wheel trailing truck but is a traveling show steam program a practical idea?

Realist, what was the condition of the 838 before it started being used as a parts source? Obviously now it's definitely not restorable?

Somebody was probably referring to this move.

However, #1243 WAS moved from city to city on a flatcar in the early '90s before being permanently displayed at Omaha. Union Pacific took it to Railfair '91 in Sacramento that way.

Anything is restorable. The British built Tornado from scratch,
