A couple of NYO&W Steam Locomotives
Author: train1275

A couple of O&W pictures I picked up on ebay a while ago.

Class Y #406 at Cadosia, NY in August 1936.

O&W had 10 of these in two orders. The 2nd order represented here was delivered in October 1923 from Schenectady (#64736)
69inch drivers - 27x28 with 50,300 lbs Tractive Effort - 200psi. I always thought these locomotives had an exceptionally pleasing appearance and they were loved by O&W enginemen.

This locomotive went to the Savannah & Atlanta as their #447 on June 9, 1945 as the O&W was getting delivery of FT diesels.

Class U-1 #245 is at Walton NY with the engineer leaning out in a classic pose looking for signals on August 25, 1935. It was still depression times in Upstate rural New York and times were tough. This engine was built by Cooke (#29285) in May 1904 as 2-6-0 and rebuilt by the O&W Middletown Shop into a 4-6-0 in 1924. 69 inch drivers with 21x28 cylinders for 30,400 lbs. tractive effort. This engine and the #246 were used frequently on passenger trains supplementing the Y class engines. The 245 would reach Valhalla in April 1947 being scrapped at Middletown, NY by Luria Brothers after 43 years of life, replaced by dwindling need for such light engines and the diesel onslaught of FT's already arrived, and soon to come F-3's and NW-2's. - The back of the photo lists H.T. Humphrey as the photographer.

Both of these photos are Upstate NY region in the Catskills (north and west of New York City area) for those unfamiliar.

WOW!  Way cool.   I think you can just about legitimately apply the ebay "rare" to those photos.   No argument that 406 is a fine looking well proportioned locomotive.
