Steam & Excursion > NKP 765 - Thunder in the GorgeDate: 08/25/15 19:48 NKP 765 - Thunder in the Gorge Author: typebangin I just got back from another great weekend of steam thanks to Norfolk Southern and the Fort Wayne RR Historical Society. If you haven't seen the multitude of posts on TO in the past few days, Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765 ran 2 Allentown to Pittston roundtrips this weekend in eastern Pennsylvania. This was a route 765 had never run before, though #759 and a number of other steam locomotives have run through Jim Thorpe and the Lehigh River Gorge in the past. As much of this line is over Reading and Northern trackage, 4-6-2 #425 was brought out from Port Clinton to pull the regularly scheduled short tourist trains that run out of the former CNJ station in Jim Thorpe. The last clip in the video shows 765 and 425 exchanging whistle salutes in town on Saturday 8/22. This is only the second time these locomotives have "met." The first time was during the 1988 NRHS convention where 765 pulled 2 trips from Boundbrook, NJ to Temple, PA (home of the original Blue Mountain and Reading tourist line). All of the other clips are also from Saturday afternoon as #765 climbs Penobscot Mountain on the way to Jim Thorpe.

Was wondering what that looked like but the traffic was insane! /Mitch Date: 08/26/15 03:29 Re: NKP 765 - Thunder in the Gorge Author: RBMN-ENGR Great stuff as always James. Looking forward to the DVD!

John Date: 08/26/15 07:34 Re: NKP 765 - Thunder in the Gorge Author: Rich_Melvin VERY NICE!
There are two things I especially like about this video clip: 1) You took the time to go to locations other than grade crossings. Most of the other videos out there about these trips were shot at grade crossings where all you hear is the whistle. The stack talk in this one is extraordinary. Nothing like that sharp, Baker-timed shotgun exhaust! 2) You did NOT show the whole train go by in every scene. Boring. Nice work, James. While in the gorge Saturday I noticed a big difference in 765 and 425 barks. 765 is distinctly sharper, not hugely deep. 425 is much deeper and when I heard it, mushier. Some of that may be due to reerser settings. Thanks for posting. Date: 08/26/15 18:21 Re: NKP 765 - Thunder in the Gorge Author: cchan006 Yeah!!! Love it!
Great job migrating from one side of the #425 to the other in time to get the meet with the #765! Got a kick out of your video storytelling for that sequence. Date: 08/26/15 19:19 Re: NKP 765 - Thunder in the Gorge Author: OCtrainguy Very cool video!
