Steam & Excursion > Geese and Casey Jones on D&S a bit lateDate: 08/26/15 21:47 Geese and Casey Jones on D&S a bit late Author: frntinplate Sorry for the delay in posting photos, spent a week after D&S "Geesefest" on narrow gauge NARCOA runs and hotels in Silverton, Chama and Antonito seem to have steam powered internet.
First 3 photos of Goose #4 on the D&S on Sunday (Aug 16) run from Silverton to Durango. Run was in tandem with Goose #5. sharing photo stops. 1. Goose #4 at Twin bridges just south of Elk Park 2. Typical of old photos of Geese, something was always being adjusted! 3. Photo stop a bit north of Needleton siding Date: 08/26/15 21:50 Moving southward to Durango Author: frntinplate 1. At Needleton Siding, Goose 5 meeting first northbound (westbound) train headed to Silverton.
2. Still at Needleton Siding, Geese in the hole for the second train to Silverton. 3. Needleton Tank Date: 08/26/15 21:54 Onward to the high line Author: frntinplate 1. Goose #5 near Cascade during a brief downpour
2. 3. The high line with both Geese running in tandem Date: 08/26/15 21:57 High line then Rockwood Author: frntinplate 1, 2 More from the high line
3. Rockwood, side by side Geese. It is amazing how similar, almost identical #4 and #5 look alike even after all the years of modifications, damage and restoration. Slight differnences in horn mounting, bell and engine cowl intake vent. And the body dings are in different places. Date: 08/26/15 22:01 Rockwood and Durango, then on to the Casey Jones Author: frntinplate 1. The all volunteer crews for both Geese and the D&S pilots
2. Goose #4 at Durango 3. Casy Jones (used on the Silverton and Gladstone as a mine ambulance) is normally on display at Silverton. It was running with the NARCOA group, shown here at El;k Park Wye during Monday afternoon's test run. All went well. Date: 08/26/15 22:04 Casey Jones Silverton to Rockwood Author: frntinplate 1. Casey Jones at Rockwood after turning on the wye ready to head back to Silverton
2.REfilling the fuel tank at Tacoma. Fuel is gravity feed to the motor and the tank is located above the operator's head (OSHA???) No fuel pump needed here. 3. Northbound back to Silverton with a photo stop at the high line curve. Date: 08/26/15 22:08 Re: Casey Jones Silverton to Rockwood Author: frntinplate 1, 2 3 At the high line curve
The Casey Jones was able to keep up the same pace as the motorcars, both down and up grade. . Date: 08/27/15 05:53 Re: Last post - Casey Jones meeting sb trains at Elk Park siding Author: njmidland Question: Did the Geese run into Durango in regular RGS service?
Date: 08/27/15 05:57 Re: Last post - Casey Jones meeting sb trains at Elk Park siding Author: HotWater Nice photos. How fast do the Geese operate, i.e. track speed? What was their track speed "back in the day"?
Date: 08/27/15 07:05 Re: Last post - Casey Jones meeting sb trains at Elk Park siding Author: frntinplate The RGS geese ran out of Duranto to Ridgeway but not on the DRGW, but on the RGS. They never operated north of Durango, at least no one has ever found a photo of them north of the Depot. Looking at old track plans, it appears a Goose heading out of Durango would actually back southward a bit then proceed west to Dolores and points north. So the photo showing #4 at Durango Depot would depict an arriving goose from the west.
Date: 08/27/15 07:07 Re: Last post - Casey Jones meeting sb trains at Elk Park siding Author: frntinplate Three are lots of stories from old days, but the track then was not nearly as good as today's D&S (D&S has lots of 90 lb rail, someting the RGS never dreamed of having). We did track speed for trains, so 10 - 15 mph seemed to be the norm except on the long straight east/south of Hermosa. No speedo on the goose, so who knows how fast we went, and no one is telling.

Mike ONeill Parker, CO Date: 08/27/15 10:46 Re: Last post - Casey Jones meeting sb trains at Elk Park siding Author: njmidland OK, so from the RGS connection just south of the station the RGS operated over trackage rights to the Durango station? I am assuming Durnago was NOT a union station but that RGS was a tenant?

I'd love to do this sometime!
Thanks... -Tom Date: 08/27/15 19:05 Re: Last post - Casey Jones meeting sb trains at Elk Park siding Author: JimBaker The Goose at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park. CA has been running on most weekdays.
My family of five with grand kids got to ride in the Bus Body with the motorman/engineer. It sounded like a four cylinder car. --Jim Baker Date: 08/27/15 19:12 Re: Last post - Casey Jones meeting sb trains at Elk Park siding Author: frntinplate Tom:
Goose #5 runs at least once a year on the D&S, usually during their August Railfest (this year it was only a Goosefest, no other visitng steam). The C&TS often hosts the Goose 5, and I believe it will be running sometime this October. Check or google the C&TS website to find out dates this year. The historical society that keeps #5 running has a website with those details but at this time I can't find it, try google and look for goose, #5, Dolores, CO. Rumor has it that goose #4 will not be running outside of the Ridgeway musuem track for some time due to insurance hassles. Date: 08/28/15 06:14 Re: Last post - Casey Jones meeting sb trains at Elk Park siding Author: njmidland Which Goose is based at Dolores? I heard a while ago that there was a plan to relay a half mile or so of the RGS to allow their Goose to run a little. Is that plan still viable?
