Such A Quiet & Serene Scene - But That's Just The Problem Here!
Author: LoggerHogger

During 1947 Bob Gray was traveling around the U.S. trying to photograph as much steam railroading as he could find.  Here is an unusual scene that he stumbled across in eastern Wyoming.

Back in 1947 the 28 miles between Clearmont and Buffalo, Wyoming was connected by the Wyoming Railway Co.  This standard gauge rail line was built in 1915 to serve the mining and agricultural industries in the area and to carry the passengers they supported.

On the quiet afternoon in August 1947 that Bob Gray came by to shoot the "action " on the line, this is what he found.  WRy #103 was at the head end of a short 6-car freight stopped out on the WRy mainline at Ucross, Wyoming.  All was quiet.  Bob had been told where he could find the train when he stopped in earlier in the day at the railroad offices at Clairmont.  It seems that the 1898 Pittsburgh-built 2-6-0 and her train had broken down earlier in the day and the crew was forced to simply tie their train down at the spot of the breakdown until repairs could be attempted the next day.

Bob had no problem in "freezing the action" of this short freight when he set up his camera and tripod. The whistling wind of the Wyoming prairie were the only sounds to be heard until he clicked his shutter to capture this scene.  Soon he was back in his car and on his way to the next railroad scene he would preserve for us all on film.

Another beautiful image. Your backstory makes each image come alive.
