Old Photos and UP steam
Author: badtanker1987

The photos do not belong to be but I was hopping I can do some research for a friend. They are from the Kemmerer, Wyoming area, I think from the 1950s. The first photo I think is a Challenger comming out of the tunnel west of Kemmerer. The other is a depot, I think it is at Fossil, Wyominmg. However I don't know for sure, anyhelp on them would be great. The photos belonged to a great grandmother, who has sinced passed.

Your first photo does have the outline if an early Challenger. The second photo does look like the Fossil area byt the formation in the background but I am not definitely sure either. Noce photos.

Call me crazy, but I see the outline of an N&W Y, which would make this a WWII era photo.

Surplus on the N&W, several Y3s went to UP along with several C&O H7 2-8-8-2s.  Too slow for UP's liking, the were all disposed of as soon as traffic and delivery of 3900s and 4000s allowed.

If this is an ex-N&W 2-8-8-2, this is the only action photos of one of these engines in UP service.

After zooming it in the front cylinders do look big, I didn't even consider 2-8-8-2s, if that's the case it's a much older and rarer photo.

I've never seen anything besides roster shots myself.  The only action scenes I've ever seen of former N&W engines were of the ones purchased by the Santa Fe.
