That does seem low for a multi-crafted skilled tradesperson.
Metal Machine Shop Operator
Heavy Vehicle Mechanic
Welder
Construction Equipment Operator
Railroad Track Worker
Boiler Operator and Mechanic
Hazardous Duty (requires use of a resperator)
 

That's one of those "you gotta do it because you love it" type jobs. Having a spouse with a real job helps too.

It is not as bad as it looks.  $50,000 a year, plus benefits.  The benefits include health care and the federal pension system. You also get job security. Plus the cost of living in Utah is not too bad. When you add it all up it is probably more like $70,000 a year.

plus if you live in Brigham City, you only have a 60+ mile round trip every day to work. those wages are high for the nps though. dave, out.

Anybody under the illusion that working on or around steam locomotives in the 21st century pays really well needs to sit down and take some very deep breaths.

And they should not have to worry about traffic backups. When we visited years ago, I knew we were a long ways out when we drove past the Morton Thiekol Rocket Booster testing facility before we arrived at the Golden Spike site.

Which comedian used to say "they lived so far out, they had to go towards town to hunt" definitely applies to the Golden Spike site.
