A Proud Steam Crew Poses For Their Moment In The Sun!
Author: LoggerHogger

As many shortline railroads were going out of business in the late 1940's and early 1950's the proud men that worked on these lines were finding themselves out of the jobs that they loved to much.

One small consolation for them was the attention they were afforded by groups of visiting railfans who came to record the passing of these fine steam railroads. One such occasion was recorded here in October, 1946 on the Nevada Copper Belt Railroad in Mason, Nevada.

The crew of NCB #5 have stopped their big ALCO 2-8-0 in the afternoon sunshine so that a small group of railfans can pose the crew with their immaculate locomotive for a formal portrait.  Everyone present knows that the days are running out for the NCB and soon the abandonment papers will be filed.

In early 1947 NCB #5 will be sold to the neighboring Virginia & Truckee to serve for the last 3 years of operations on that famous shortline until it too will be abandoned and #5 retired once again.  When no buyers were found for #5 she was finally scrapped in 1951.

No more would she be asked to pose with her crew for her portrait.

What an outstanding picture of a solid loco and the men who kept it rolling along. That must be Martin's shadow in the lower right corner of the picture! Thanks for posting!

There are so few pictures of the 5 running on the NCB, anything even close to this is certainly welcome!!
