This is the first image I have seen of taking on water at Los Pinos. I did not know that tank was servicable. Learn something every day. What I've always believed is that the east side is spectacular for color while the west side is excellent for the sound and fury of engine action. It's too bad that many opt for the latter over the former. You capture the change in vegetation and color as the train travels westward, though the desert shrubs also show some yellow too. A summer of rain brought forth one of the greatest color shows I have seen.

IIRC Los Pinos had a pipe issue which was repaired within the past year. In dry years Cresco is problematic. Thanks for posting and for making the point that if you haven't ridden the Cumbres & Toltec, you NEED TO! (I first rode from Antonito to Cumbres Pass on a "Fall Color Special" in 1963 or 1964 and have volunteered there as often as possible since 1993).

When the train is so long that it will block Hwy 17 on Cumbres if the locomotive takes water, they stop at Los Pinos. Doesn't happen very often. Jason Rose Spring, TX Rio Grande Explorations |
