C&O 1309 Lifted off drivers
Author: jlg759

Today another milestone was reached by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad as 1309 was lifted to remove the drivers for repairs. Work on the locomotive is moving full steam ahead and too see a C&O 2-6-6-2 is amazing. Please consider a donation to the 1309 project by visiting the WMSR foundation.

It CAN be done without a half-million dollar overhead crane that might get used once every 10
years or so!!

Good job, WMSR.

Now, when are you going to replace all those staybolt caps???

With the 1309 not being ready for service until July 24th, and the 734 out of service, what Will the WMSRR use to power their trains starting in April?

In the interim how about WMSR lease a QJ from RJ Corman?  In the diesel arena, Georges Creek Railway has some aurthentic WM diesels.

Call the WM and tell them your idea, and don't forget to tell them that you are going to provide all the money to accomplish it.

This will be an interesting test as to whether diesel powered trains for most of 2016 will affect ridership numbers.  Personally I doubt if it will.  Most members of the non-railfan public want a train ride and couldn't care less what's pulling it.  Then there are the diesel fans who would prefer that GP30 on the point.

While I think that the general public cares less about what type of locomotive is pulling a train there is still a certain draw a steam locomotive has on customers.

As far as passengers noticing, if they were still using the P-70s or DL&W motors of days gone by, maybe, but little is noticed once you're in your seat as to what is up front from inside those climate controlled cars until you hit a curve.

I doubt they'll experience a huge drop.

I've never really understood this general idea that passengers don't really notice if there is steam or diesel.  It goes against everything I have witnessed when watching steam trains.  People know a steam locomotive is special.  There are more cameras out taking photos of a steam locomotive pulling into the station than when a diesel is on the point.  And not just railfans either.

On the WMSR, because they use sealed up cars, the big experiences for the trip are when the train pulls into the station and the turning of the locomotive at Frostburg.  During both times people are crowded around the locomotive with cell phones out.  I never experience such levels of excitement at tourist railroads with all diesel power.

Not to mention it was sitting out in the elements of Baltimore for how many years?

IIRC, RJ Corman's QJ's form 4 is expired.

The RJC 2008 still has 7 years 4 months left on its Form 4.

Re: the Chinese engine(s)....

If it has burned through 1,472 days "under steam"..... The years remaining is a useless statistic......
It's service records may show that it's due for the 15-year thorough boiler cleaning and inspection, jacket & lagging removal, seams examination, staybolts inspection, including the ultrasound. As well as the other required tests and certifications.

Check it out.

Wes,
She has approximately 47 service days used since March 2008. At this rate she has 7 years 4 months left on her form 4.
