Steam & Excursion > This Roundhouse Is Still All Steam When We Visit In 1946!Date: 11/25/15 03:52 This Roundhouse Is Still All Steam When We Visit In 1946! Author: LoggerHogger The Santa Fe roundhouse in San Bernardino, California was still teaming with nothing but steam power when this photographer visited in 1946.
We see AT&SF#3148 slowly crawling onto the truss-platform turntable as one of the roundhouse crew checks her tracks for alignment. Who can spot all the different wheel arrangements represented by the tenders facing out to the turntable pit? Martin Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 11/25/15 03:57 by LoggerHogger. It is amazing to me that the railroads made money considering the costs associated with steam. A master mechanic would look at that picture and start making mental notes of who needed what, when. Thanks for sharing!

They opened the new Barstow, CA diesel shop in late 1940s, don't have the exact date. Date: 11/25/15 18:42 Re: This Roundhouse Is Still All Steam When We Visit In 1946! The few diesels were maintained at Barstow and Redondo Junction in LA. San Bernardino was still all steam in 1946 with the exception of the Gas-Electric that ran on the LA - San Bernardino locals.
