IAIS 210-2 speedometer redlines at 50 mph!
Author: slacks

On a run back to Newton Ia a few years ago, steam train stopped for servicing at Iowa City. Crew allowed fans into the cab. I liked the speedo in red at 50mph. Don,t know if it ever hit 50, maybe someone knows? Engineers side is on port side.

Don't know about the 50.  But I sure wish they were utilized a whole lot more.

I have forgotten, what is the driver size on those engines.  I want to say 58".

59.06 inches (1,500 mm).
You were really close!

According to Wikipedia:
These QJs have 59.06-inch (1,500 mm) drivers.
They run at 213 psi, and their maximum speed is,
indeed, 50 mph.  With drivers that small, they had
to have been built for drag freight service..  They
were never intended to be speedy.  Their cylinders
are about 25-1/2 inches by about 31-1/2 inches, and
they develop about 3,500 hp at 41 mph.

Timetable speed is 40 mph but passenger trains are usually given a bulletin authorizing 5 mph over.  I'd have to guess that engineer Sandberg was going close to 50 at the West Liberty runby during Train Festival in July 2011.  It was quite a spectacle.
