Roanoke, VA - 06:17am - 611 Heads on Out
Author: classiclights

This morning at 06:17am, N&W #611 departed Roanoke For Spencer, NC during a hard freeze. At 17° F, this was the coldest day during which this 'J' has run since she began her career as an excursion engine back in 1982. My fingers were numb enough by showtime that I just took my best guess as to framing and settings and just let my Panasonic Lumix FZ200 (12mp) capture the rest. With the exception of several still image inserts, the video portion is unedited. One has to admit that even without being under heavy throttle and/or pulling a lengthy consist, this is one very impressive locomotive - classy & graceful, among many other adjectives certainly describes her beauty! Enjoy this short video clip (1 minute & 50 seconds) as she passes her birthplace, the Historic East End Shops.

Oh my. Definitely a different take. Says as much by what you can't see as by what you can.

Very nice. Has the whistle been changed, or is that still Ms. George's whistle?

Chills. Wow. Great work!

Ya know, watching the steamup video on Facebook the other day I was thinking the whistle sounded a little more like the "old" 611...

It is a different whistle Jack. Not sure who owns this one.

Do you remember which page had that video? I'd like to see it.

This Hancock whistle belongs to Scott Lindsay. Sounds mighty fine.

WOW! Not hard to imagine an early morning passenger train leaving the station. Truly a unique video with a unique perspective. Thanks.

Here's a direct link to the video, it's quite short but she sounds nice: https://www.facebook.com/fran.ferguson.9/videos/10153507873743224/

If for whatever reason it's inaccessible, as so often seems to be the case on Facebook, you can find it on the Fire Up 611 page. Enjoy!

Thanks. I agree,,,,,this whistle sounds MUCH better, and more like what I remember from the excursion era as well as the late 1950s.

Oooooohh....that is a beautiful whistle!!
And I, too, like the barely-seen train --
so evocative..... Just like the old days!

Happy and safe steaming, 611!!

Everyone -- be safe, and have fun!!

Long live the 611!  :)
