ATSF 3751 Arrival at Fullerton This Afternoon
Author: TheNavigator

In preparation for this weekend's Railroad Days at the Fullerton depot, 3751 ran from LA to Fullerton along with Amtrak and BNSF equipment early this afternoon.  The cloudy skies put a damper on photography, but I thought I'd post a few pics to document the movement.

Thanks for looking,
GK

1.  Arriving at Fullerton.

2 and 3.  3751 and Amtrak equipment moving slowly on the spur into the display area.

Thanks! I was put off by the clouds--duh. What time of day did they arrive in Fullerton?

The ferry move went past the Fullerton Depot at 12:45; 3751 moved into the spur at the display area at 1:00.

Great work! Further proof that man does not live on full-sun alone.

I enjoy taking photos on cloudy days, particularly of a very contrasty subject like the 3751 and it's "entourage". The clouds turn the light into a great big softbox with very even light. You lose a little contrast and color but look what you get in return.  Note the even lighting of all parts of the 3751. On a sunny day the running gear or other parts in shadow often gets "blacked out" and the contrast exceeds the ability of the camera sensor (or film, if you will) to copy the entire range of the subject. In the old days we called it "latitude" and nowadays I think it's called "dynamic range". It makes you have an "either-or" situation. If you get the shadows OK the highlights are blown out and vice-versa. To me, digital "HDR" just doesn't do it. It's always looked fake to me.

After all that, the photos you got at Fullerton are some of the best I've seen. Congratulations from an old dog who's been doing this for 60 years.

Have fun, be safe,

Great photos, Gary.  The clouds didn't seem to hurt these photos any!

Good stuff! That was around the worst of high sun so you were better with cloud cover.

Excellent photos of a great locomotive!  And ya got her
rods down with her bell ringing in the last photo.    I am
so glad you took these wonderful photos even though it
was overcast.   Others are quite correct -- the clouds did
allow you to show all the 3751's details.  Love it!!

Folks should never decide to skip taking pix when it is
cloudy -- just look at the results you can get then.

Congratulations on the IOTD!

Why does everyone complain about it being cloudy when they take pictures of locomotives etc?
In this day and age everybody should be thankful that engine # xwz is running for you to enjoy and take pictures of.

Great catch even if the conditions weren't perfect.  I like the engines that Amtrak sent over, those sure look nice.
