ATSF 2926 Update - April 23, 2016
Author: Cumbresfan

Many small projects to reinstall and test engine parts are being completed each session. These include the lube lines - all lines have lube oil passed through them using the various pumps. Some leaks were found and addressed. Brake shoe backing plates are being ground to fit the brake shoes; some worn pin bushings for these are being removed and new ones fitted. The pilot end footboard steps were reinstalled; they were removed to work on the lube oil piping and other work. The flexible staybolt sleeves were all painted black to assist in marking caps if leaks are found in the next boiler air pressure test. More at the link.

The biggest attraction of the week was moving the locomotive and tender so that markers for the engine house footprint could be laid out. The photos and a 1:33 minute video show it being moved with the tender to the west end of the siding. The tender was left on the east side of the inspection pit while the engine is on the west side. Other photos show brake shoe backing plate bushings being made, wrapping of the steam lines and steam turret cover work. Of course, the kitties scrurrying and a few visitors seem to make the work day go by faster and both, in different ways, appreciate that there are goodies available to eat.

1. Don't get between a kitty and breakfast!
2. And a jelly donut enjoyed by a young visitor leaves its mark!
3. A front view of our engine; she looks real pretty!

Visited the site Thursday (4-29), watched three workers placing rebar in  footing trenches for the 22'x130', shed-roofed engine house with coming exhaust fans, two side man-doors, roll-up doors at each end, with concrete placement  in a matter of days.
Talked to NMSLRHS prez Dr. Mike Hartshorne supervising the work, said main steel structurals will be trucked in the next couple weeks, followed by steel roof and wall sheathing from a second supplier.
He said a crane has been rented for two weeks in May which should be sufficient time  to erect the 'house by the end of the month.

As a member of the Branford Trolley Museum on the Long Island Sound coast near New Haven CT, I followed posted progress of their two new metal car barns  last year on built-up land +14' above yard elevation to avoid the next 100-year flood and  better protect their vintage trollies and rapid transit cars' underfloor electricals damaged from past megastorms, particularly recent and severe  Hurricane Sandy and a previous storm.
Steel was delivered, workers rapidly erected the pre-cut and drilled pieces, taking a couple weeks to put up both barns.

Looks like the 2926 house should easily be ready to shelter her by the end of May, per timely arrival of all pieces/parts.
Dr. Mike said postponing original project elements such as pouring a concrete floor saved  money and sped up the start of construction.
Dimensions and information  are shown in the latest NMSLRHS newsletter at http://nmslrhs.org/.

Dr. Mike added that the eleven resident, feral, fixed 2926 kitties have an international website following, some of whom send angry emails if kitty pics  sometimes don't appear;
and they are fed by a couple who live near the work site.

They might want to get a bid on a cat door for the new shed, to shelter the felines, and discourage the mice that will get in through the cat door.

Thanks so much for the update!  SO good that such great
[progress is being made, and that the 2926 will have a roof
over her head soon.  And I second the suggestion that a cat
door be installed.  One additional suggestion: to keep out
unwelcome critters, if you do install a cat door, please do
consider putting collars on all the kitties and installing an
electronic or magnetic or motorized cat door.  Just a
suggestion; I have never used one.

Best of luck with your continued restoration!
