A Steamy (and Vintage Diesel) Weekend
Author: TheNavigator

Last weekend saw two railfest events in Southern California:  The Fillmore & Western's Railfest 2016 in Fillmore, and Railroad Days at the Fullerton depot in Fullerton.  Saturday on the F&W featured several trips with 2-8-0 #14 (Baldwin, 1913, ex-D&NE) as well as one diesel-powered trip, while 3751 was under steam at Fullerton.  This being the case, RSD5 and I made the round-trip to the F&W on Saturday to catch the action.  (#14 was scheduled to operate on Sunday also, but no diesel.)  Included here are Saturday's shots on the F&W, along with a couple pics of 3751's Sunday-evening departure from Fullerton.  (3751's arrival at Fullerton is covered in a separate thread below, as well as Kurt765's great night work with 3751 on Saturday, also in a separate thread.)

Thanks for looking,
GK

1.  At Fillmore, 2-8-0 #14 is ready for the 10:00 AM trip, the first of four excursions of the day.

2.  Shoving back from the depot.  The steam excursions ran from Fillmore a few miles east to just beyond the Fillmore fish hatchery and return.  An evening dinner train ran from Fillmore east to Piru and return.

3.  #14 and train in the rural countryside of Ventura County.

(Few more to follow.)

4.  F&W GP35 #3501 was the power for the Fillmore-to-Santa Paula round trip, shown passing an abandoned packing house on the outskirts of Fillmore on the return leg from Santa Paula.  3501 is originally a Pennsy unit, coming to the F&W via PC, Conrail, and the Arizona & California.

5.  F7A 100 is displayed on the turntable at Fillmore.  Originally C&NW, this unit spent time on the Maryland Midland before coming to the F&W and ran on the F&W in full MMID paint and lettering.

6.  The last steam-powered train of the day was the 4:30PM dinner train from Fillmore to Piru and return.  #14 ran tender-first to Piru, where it ran around its train for some front-uncoupled shots.  This shot is as #14 makes the run-around move, with crew members riding the footboards adding a nice touch.

7.  Making the reverse movement, backing to the train.

8.  Heading from Piru west to Fillmore, just before sunset.

9.  At Fullerton late on Sunday, and unlike last year, 3751 was front-coupled as it made its reverse move out of the display track spur on to the main.

10.  Also unlike last year, after Amtrak #4 departed Fullerton, 3751 & Co. pulled forward and stopped for the assembled fandom waiting at the Fullerton depot.  (4279’s cab numbers are actually black, but as I had to lighten the picture during PP they washed out.  No idea how to fix this.)  Had to use the flash, as the sun had set about a half-hour ago.

11.  Roster at Fullerton, with flash after sunset.

Killer pictures, very nice work, the F&W stuff especially at Piru is much appreciated, there are a few
things I miss from SoCal.

After a few trains cleared, the 3751 consist backed up east of the junction and headed west on track 1. When they backed up, the headlight on AMTK 42 was not on. This seemed odd.

Beautiful set of photos - thanks so much for sharing!

The photo wiht the F7 almost looks as if it's a diorama held up
against an outdoor background!

As for 2-8-0 #14 - I was trying to picture where she'd hale from...
Duluth & Northeastern Railroad  - Minesota.  Looks at home
in California - must be the silver smokebox?

Hmm... what makes a steam engine look native to CA?

Nice shots of #3751, too.  Hopefully she'll get up from behind
herself and out on the main with a long train behind her - soon!

/Mitch
