Steam & Excursion > You Didn't See Much Of This Power In This City In 1946!

When we think of swichers in San Francisco in the 1940's we think of scores of Southern Pacific 0-6-0's with a variety of tenerder designs.  We rarely remember that the Santa Fe also called the streest of San Francisco home.

In this view taken in 1946 AT&SF #9016 is caught during her daily chores in The City.  She is a big beefy Santa Fe 0-6-0 and certainly has a commanding presence as she roams around the streets picking up and delivering her cars.

If anyone can tell us the location of this photo that would be appreciated.

Based upon the 'China Basin' building in the backround, I would say it is at the yard east of 3rd street and north of Mariposia St.

Note the Kilroy looking chalk graffiti on the boxcar.

Me three.
There were not a lot of tall buildings to go by at that time, that one lines up as described. I think it was the Phone Company building and may still be there. The 'China Basin' building is all glass now, surrounded by condos.

Looking at the 1938 aerial at davidrumsey.com,
it seems the street in the foreground is 4th St,
or whatever they called it after it crossed 3rd St.
The engine is pointed SE.

Telephone Bldg is still at 140 New Montgomery.

Where in the photo is the "China Basin building?"  Did you recognize the building or did you read lettering on it?  (on my monitor, I can't fully read any of the lettering on the buildings in the photo).

You see the Pacific Telephone bldg near the
left edge of the pic-- the water tank just
right of it is on the roof of the China Basin
bldg that extends from 3rd to 4th St along
the northwest shore of China Basin or
Mission Creek or whatever that long inlet is.

See the shadow of the tank, midway between
3rd and 4th St?

The China Basin Building is that long continuous building starting at the left side and continuing nearly to the middle of the photo.

Many people remember the 'China Basin building' as being a dark blue color.

The building we're calling the China Basin bldg
(heavily remodelled) is still between 3rd and 4th St.
The ballpark is NE of 3rd St.
