ATSF 2926 Update - May 7, 2016
Author: Cumbresfan

The CMO and Madam Secretary were on a well deserved vacation so the work status report was posted by the Asst. CMO. The steam fountain cover was dented out and a hasp installed. More piping was insulated and sealed. The new wood window frames were varnished prior to installation. Leak chasing was performed for airlines running from the compressors. The car mover, needed to move the engine in and out of the new engine shed started receiving some serious repairs, mainly related to the hydraulics. Forms were placed and concrete pumped into the foundation of the engine shed.

Numerous photos and a video show placement of cement for the engine shed footings. Also shown is work on the car mover, fabrication of a new wrench to assist in tightening hard to get at unions, brake shoe support finishing, cab woodwork lacquering and more pipe insulation. Six short videos accompany this week's photo update.

Kitty update: I was informed by the cat attendants (those two dedicated folks who feed and water the kitties each morning) that indeed raccoons and skunks have been seen on the security camera videos looking for left over cat food, which is now rationed to only a day at a time. Because of the new cab seats and woodworking, kitties will not be welcome in the new engine shed. If a cat door is installed, it will be exit only in case a cat is trapped inside at Saturday closing (three days until until opening on Wednesday morning). They've thrived with current care and that will be continued.

We thank all those who have supported the engine house construction. There are numerous opportunities for helping on site or by donating as we get close to hydro testing this summer and move closer to steam later this year. If the pace seems slow, remember, all are volunteers who work as they are able twice a week. And performing skilled work takes time. So contributions are always welcome; see the link for details.

It's gonna be a tight squeeze in that building with the locomotive in there!

Just don't breath!  Glad to see a permanent building going up to protect it, nice job.

It does look more like a garage than a shop. But the main idea is getting it out of the weather, and under lock and key. The sun, rain, snow, taggers, theives & vandals will have a hard time leaving their mark with it tucked in for the night, in the new building. Outside work has never bothered these guys, If it needs work and maintenance, and it will, they can just roll it back outside and go about their business like they always have. (I bought a new truck a while back, and it kills me seeing it sit outside in all kinds of weather, because it's too big for my garage)

That's the idea, just a safe place to keep it. "Lurch," the appropriately named car mover, will be used to pull 2926 out morning on work days and push it back at the end of the day.

Car barn update, Friday, May 20...
All main steel structurals are up!
Were erected after arriving this week--seven inverted U support assemblies tied together with horizontal long wall and roof perlins.
Packs of corrugated sheet steel panels also came, presumably to deck the roof,  more  to come shortly to enclose the walls.
Two large rollup doors, each to be hung at the  barn ends, two "man doors" and a pair of ventilation fans will complete the project, possibly by June 1st.
