NKP 587 Follow up
Author: px320

A couple of weeks ago there was a thread on the status of NKP 587.

I mentioned I had ridden an excursion in July of 1991 as part of a scout for rr equipment in connection with a movie called Night Ride Down.

A question was asked if I had any pics and I replied that I would see what I could find.

Here's what I found.

Pics 1 and 2 are at Kokomo, IN prior to departure.

Pic 3 is the engineer,  sorry I don't have his name.

There's an old "Bob and Tom" morning radio recording on YouTube from the day the rode in the cab of the 587 to the Indiana State Fair. At that time (late 80's - early 90's??) the engineers name was Russ Southerland and the fireman was Paul Meister. Pretty comical piece if you care to listen. About 15 minutes long.

Following the 1989 Asheville Convention, 587 was ferried back to Indiana by way of Sevier Yard in Knoxville, TN. The following day she journeyed north on the NS line taking her thru Clinton, TN where I and a handful of guys caught her crossing the Clinch River, a sight which to this day is one of my fondest memories of her. A year or two later 587 would handle a trip from Detroit to Toledo via the Ann Arbor RR connecting in Milan, MI to Toledo.

Knowing the NS crew landed me a ride in the toolcar that day where Mssrs. Southerland & Meister also happened to be riding. I had a freshly printed 16x20 of this image along with me for show & tell. What I did not realize is that I would not be in possession of this print by days end. They were not to be denied.

Fun day, fun trip behind a great engine which could pull beyond anyone's wildest dreams!
