A day at Strasburg
Author: RNinRVR

I spent this past Monday visiting the Strasburg Railroad and shot the noon and 2 pm trains and rode the 1 pm.

I am set up at Black Horse Rd., Carpenters on the railroad, and we see ex N&W class M 475 bringing the noon train up the hill from Lehman Place.

As 475 crosses the road I catch him in the classic rods down shot.

While riding the 1 pm train we see the 475 running around us at Lehman Place.

At Strasburg, the 475 has run around the train and is ready to couple up for the next run.

Shot of the running gear of the 475.

475 is approaching Ebenshade Rd. in the run back to Strasburg.

Imagine that, two N&W steam locomotives still operating almost 17 years into the 21st century.

Just noticed something.  Is that 475's original tender?   Looks like a USRA tender, perhaps from a light Mike or Pacific.

I think it is from a K1 4-8-2?

According to Lewis Jeffries' book, the Ms were delivered with 6,000 gal. tenders. In the 1940s they were upgraded to 9,000 gal. tenders. In the 1950s they were upgraded to 10,000 gal. USRA tenders, and a few even got 12,000 gal., 6-axle tenders.

I'm not sure what, if any, USRA power the N&W had, though. The Y2 became the prototype for the USRA 2-8-8-2, but I don't believe N&W ever owned a 2-8-2, and I don't recall seeing any photos of USRA 4-6-2s.
