Steam & Excursion > This Engine Changed More Than Owners She Also Changed Fuel!Date: 05/20/16 03:39 This Engine Changed More Than Owners She Also Changed Fuel! Author: LoggerHogger Even mainline railroads would sell off certain surplus locomotives from time to time. Rarely though would the sell off relatively new engines. However that did take place with this engine.
Western Maryland received this big 4-truck Shay from Lima in June 1906. She was the first 4-truck Shay ordered by WM. She came from the factory as a coal burner as were all WM locomotives. Something must not have been right with #900 in the eyes of Western Maryland because in just 4 short years she was sold to the Mexico Northwestern Ry in Madera, Mexico. We see her soon after she arrived south of the border in this photo. Besides the attire of the train crews being quite different than those of the WM, we see that she now has been outfitted to burn wood rather than coal. And that is lots of wood for this huge 119-ton engine! Can you imagine the work it took to keep this engine's tender full of wood and then to keep the boiler up to pressure one piece of wood at a time? Martin Edited 5 time(s). Author: Labby The tender for this Shay looks similar to the tenders behind the wood burning, cabbage stacked Sumpter Valley Mikados. They must have employed wood-passers as part of the crew.

Author: LarryDoyle As I see it, the fireman's and wood passer's jobs on this engine as it stands in this photo would be really easy! She's not going anywhere under her own power with her driveshaft disconnected.
