ATSF 2926 Update - May 14, 2016
Author: Cumbresfan

The CMO was still enjoying his time off and Bob DeGroft, VP & Assistant CMO, provided the work status update. Engine house forms were removed and fill placed, leveled and tamped as there will not be a concrete floor. On the engine, the last of the lubrication line leaks were dealt with. There are air compressor fittings being installed at several locations to allow operation of various appliances when the engine is not steamed up as well as air tools. Once the 26L brake system is installed, air will be available to operate the brakes when the engine is cold. Brake shoe brackets have all been machined to perfect the fit with the shoes; painting of the brackets and installation will be next.

The photo set shows leveling and dirt work on the engine house location, painting and various work items including the nearly complete 26L brake installation.

From the Society Secretary, Gail Kirby:

To all our members,

We will be having a Grand Opening and ribbon cutting for our Engine House/Garage on June 11th at 10 am.  (Normal hours of operation begin at 7:30 for the summer, so you shouldn't be late.  If you're late you will miss the show.  We're having a BBQ lunch that day and we need to know if you would like to come and how many so we can plan for the food.  If you've already signed up, no need to let me know.  I know a lot of you contributed to the cause and we appreciate your donations.  This is a small way of letting you know just how much we do appreciate your willingness to help.

There will be some dignitaries on hand as well.

Please RSVP to this email if you plan to make it.  I know a lot of you are from far away, but wanted to give you the chance to make that decision.

If in the area, Trainorders members are also welcome. Gail asks that you email her if you plan to attend:  kirby1953@msn.com

ALL 6 or 7 flying B-17s in the U. S. are G models.

How will the new BNSF policy of no steam excursions affect 2926 ?   --Kelly

There is no new no steam policy on BNSF! 2926 will get out on the track owned by the state.

What new BNSF policy? SBRHS certainly didn't cite a new such policy as the reason proposed trips did not happen. I have yet to read a reason why scorn should be laid upon BNSF with regard to steam on their lines.

Looks to be the Aluminum Overcast, which is a B-17G.  Delivered to the US Army Air Corps on 18 May 1945, too late to see service in WWII.  Stripped of it's military components, it was basically sold for scrap a year after it's delivery.  It bounced from owner to owner, serving as a cargo hauler, ariel photography and surveying and finally crop/forest dusting and fire service before it was donated to the Experimental Aircraft Association in 1979.  In 1983 it underwent a 10 year restoration and began touring in 1994.  It is currently based in Oskosh, WI.

Please read the two other threads about the reasons the trips were canceled; it was not BNSF. What WILL get steam trips canceled is unfounded speculation blaming one or more Class 1's for cancelations that can affect their future cooperation.

Back to 2926...Tuesday, May 24 update visit:
A half dozen workers (really) continue to swiftly hang mostly pre-cut pieces/parts.  All should be ready for the June 11 "grand opening" party. Workmanship looks superb.
Ceiling insulation, both 208-volt exhaust fans/motors are onsite, rollup and regular doors are in town.
Per a 2926 member,  wiring for lights is proposed, as is a small, one-way exit door  to let any stray kitties leave the building.

Sorry little guys, those coming, comfy new cab seats are off-limits.

2926 needs a few more months of put-together,  presently lacks...

*installed completed superheater tube assemblies; throttle header work?
 *completed 26L brake system.
 *firebox re-line.
 *boiler insulation/sheet steel jacketing/paint.
*completed cab controls, gauges, piping; new windows, seats.
*remaining miscellaneous plumbing.
*mounted rebuilt, auxiliany electrical dynamo, wiring.
*sand dome remount, piping.
*rehabbed extendable stack and lifter.

Two of three reconditioned safety valves just arrived .

And regardless of BNSF's steam loco operation policy, NM owns, has available  97 miles of  BN's  former, now NMDOT track, Belen- Abq-Lamy; could run another 65 miles to Las Vegas, NM if  BNSF, still segment owner, would agree.

Running  Abq/Santa Fe, including 18 new Rail Runner miles along I-25's median and 5 miles of rebuilt Santa Fe Southern line,  would be a non-BNSF home-run tourist attraction, except there's no way to  turn 2926 in the City Different. A former in-town wye is de-tracked, has development on its tail. The old wye at Lamy Junction, 18 miles south, is too tight, too shaky.

You have to admire this group, they just continue to restore one of the biggest 4-8-4s ever to grace the rails, spread no stupid rumors, and get things done that need to be done, like the shelter for the locomotive.  Way to go, NMRLHS (I know that isn't correct, but close).

So BNSF allows a 162-mile steam excursion on its rails in Illinois?      Hmmmmm.
