There Is No Mistaking This Place Is The Summit Of This Line!
Author: LoggerHogger

There are several famous "Summits" crossed by various railroads in the West.  Some are in easy to reach locations and some are fairly remote.  Here is one of the remote ones.

Southern Pacific famous photographer/engineer H.H. Arey has set up his camera to capture the very summit of the SP's Tillamook Branch high in the Oregon Coast Range.  The year is 1928 and SP #2538 is being assisted by #2934 and another 2-8-0 "hog" engine at the rear of the train as they cross over the summit at Cochran, Oregon.  They will now begin to drop down the 3% grade to Timber and then on to Portland with their heavy freight.

Located exactly 800 miles from San Francisco on the SP Cochran was the highest point on the Tillamook Branch at 1824 feet above sea level.  Cochran boasted a depot, water tank and turntable among her facilities to serve this high-point on the railroad.

This fine photo truely captures this famous railroad branch "at it's peak".

Yes. He even states that in the description, and gives the locomotive road number.

Oops. That was a slight typo. I meant to say, "So they just went downhill from THEY'RE!" :)
