Blind driver question
Author: santafedan

We had a discussion about blind drivers.  Is the width of the blind driver a little wider than the flanged driver?  That is, is it even wider including the flange?,

From those I've seen, the tire with out a flange, i.e. "blind tire" is just as wide, back to front, as a regular flanged tire.

Usually the blind tire on logging engines is about 1/2"-1" wider than the flanged ones to accomidate the tighter raduis curves encountered on rough track with sharp curves.

The wider tires don't do well if passing over 'self-guarded' switch frogs where they are common...

The self guarded switch frogs have raised outer rims (wide enough to accommodate a tread-and-flange of  conventional width.
The self-guarded frogs will cause nthe very wide "blind tires" to climb up and slam back down when blind drivers clatter over them..
