No. 844 Prepares for Frontier Days Debut

Since many don't have their settings to list newest replies first, this came across the UP news wire.

Thanks for catching that, dropped it in the Frontier Days debut thread as it seemed the most appropriate.

844 video, under steam and moving
Author: Finderskeepers

Thought I would share this UP video of 844 under steam and moving under her own power.
The text "from a boiler to an operating steam engine in a matter of weeks" is a joke of epic proportions though

OK, nice short video and now I'm sure all those who have been in doubts will start with their rants.  Congratulations to all the hard working people who have gotten her under steam and here's hoping that all goes well going forward.

Why only 150 psi steam and a diesel pushing?

Glad I got in the popcorn line early as this is a sure fire sell-out coming. Should be good for at least 4/5 pages and 3-4,000 visits mostly about how bad you know who is. Glad no one took me up on my offer to wager 1k that 844 wouldn't be done in time. Looks like by some miracle it will make it??  Let's hope it operates safely and is a credit to the UPRR as at the end of the day those are the only two things that matter.

Why is it that every time I see a post on Facebook with an official update from Union Pacific - my literal first thought it how many pages this post will "blow up" to on TrainOrders?  Sad state of affairs indeed.

To the steam professionals out there, aside from moving the locomotive around prior to firing it up, what reason would there be to have a diesel attached? Load testing?

It could be that the boiler pressure is so low (under 200 psi) that the 844 does NOT have the air pumps operational, thus there might not be enough air pressure for the brakes. Just enough for the power revers gear.

I hope 844 runs good and there are no problems

Probably won't move by itself under 150 psi steam??

Thanks for the clarification! Would there be any good reason to conduct a test such as this at half of the MAWP?

Any updates on PRR #1361?    ; )

I'll second that - though, maybe it's all the naysaying
(on Trainorders along, lol) that got UP #844 back
in steam so fast?  Lol.

This is nice to see as well.....

Days Denver Post Special, which runs from Denver to
Cheyenne, they will immediately begin work rebuilding

Maybe the rantings on TO had something to do with the last minute frenzy to get it together :)

Just cause they showed 150psi at the beginning doesn't mean it only has 150psi when moving around.

The kids over on Facebook are crowing pretty loudly about Ed doing the lord's work, and bringing 844 back from the dead. He's like the naughty nurse that almost kills the patient, then takes all the glory for saving it. There's a few on FB that know the story, and are trying to spread the truth, but Ed's disiples have them out gunned. The only thing that matters over there now is, 844's hot again.

I'm not holding my breath..... I hope it will be able to make the short run from Cheyenne to Denver without any problems. We will see.. I will be looking to see if 844 stays spotless the entire weekend, if it does then then the blow down's have not been changed, and the boiler mud build up will begin again. If the top of the 844 shows signs scale dirt then the blow downs were changed back and blow downs are being done, then the 844 has a chance. There shouldn't be any cab signal issues on this run, and we will see if all those nagging issues the 844 had are gone with all the restoration work. ;-)

So where are the nay sayers now?  If the run is successful, and that's probably a big if, all should write an apology to current management for the hatred that has been spewed here. It's fine to be critical, but some of the vitriol here has been way over the top.

Bet she has a diesel behind her on the Denver trip to help push her along. DL still has problems that is not being mentioned I am sure.
