Obviously back when they were still using the Bunker fuel. Photo run-bys were also always SUPER SMOKY.

Speaking of firemen,  is "terrific Ted" still going to be the fireman or is someone else getting the honors?

I always dislike heavy smoke and it has nothing to do with pollution.  I just like to imagine the hot, efficient fire, whether coal or oil, that a light hazy exhaust indicates.

Yes, "terrific Ted" is STILL the "Fireman".  Please note that I put "Fireman" in quotes.

If you would have looked in the firebox peep hole, you would have seen a dull orange fire.  Smoke like that a few times and don't sand the flues and the fireman won't know what hit him.   Foamers or not, that's waaaay excessive.
One of our fireman subscribed to the theory that you gotta make smoke to make steam.  He didn't understand the concept that all that black smoke is fuel that didn't burn.  Some things you can't fix.  He never would run over 5psi on the atomizer either.

Kind of reminds me of all the idiots with "tunered" diesel pickups that blow clouds of black smoke. THEY think they are cool.  In reality, all it means is they don'r know how to tune an engine.

Back in those days the mechanical department was operatiung the 8444 with Papa Acord at the throttle. They were burning anything cheap and in most cases it was slop oil from the refinery in Denver. When they had the flash back situation they tested the oil and it had all sorts of other products in it like antifreeze and other slop products. That fuel really burned horribly and they had to over fire it to keep the steam up. That was when they started specifying the number 5 burner oil.
