RFD and 3985
Author: callum_out

The RFD Network just showed the UP Steam Team's 3985 video authored by Bob Krieger and Steve Watrous,
enough to bring tears to one's eyes. It's amazing to look back and see how much that engine ran in the mid-90s,
an excellent effort by Bob and Steve. It's a complete shame that engine sits parked.

Is it legal to post those videos online? It might be a good thing to have the 844s firebox rebuild, 3985s running a lot, and the Archer Hill freight push. If it's no longer endorsed by UP and is no longer available for sale through the souvenir shop, I don't see why it would be an issue. I just last week got a copy of the 844 dvd off ebay, and have had the 3985 dvd for some time now. Both awesome videos. I can't stop watching the 844 push on that stalled freight!

Really depends on who holds the copyrights to the video. If not public domain, it could get Todd in trouble.

Most of those were Gandy Dancer productions and George Voitman probably owns the rights. Steve Watrous or Bob Krieger will know.

Steve is correct. Gandy Dancer video held the copyright and the UP steam crew purchased them and resold them.
Just as they did all the other items sold in the souvenir car.
And thanks for all the kind thoughts. Steve Watrous donated his time and talents to put those together for the crew.
I helped supply the narration on some of them. Bill Waldrop narrated some of the later videos.
The 3985 was my favorite locomotive and always will be in my heart.

Both of these programs are very very good!! I was very fortunate to get them as they were still available from UP as of Aug. 2014, took them a month to get to my house but it was well worth it. I will agree that the 844 Archer Hill scenes are impressive to watch. The firebox rebuild is also very interesting and seeing how it was completely rebuilt from scratch basically.

I felt honored to see 3985 run. To see her sit gives me a pain deep in my chest. The videos are gems. The folks involved are the best.  d

I would love to buy a copy of this video.  Is that now
impossible?  I hope not!  IF there is any LEGAL way
I could buy one -- without violating the copyright --
that anyone knows of, please let me know.  And, no,
it is not available eBay -- I just looked.

TIA!

Aren't the steam crew DVDs available through the UP Company Store? I thought some "outside contractor" took over the complete control of the former steam crew "souvenir line" as well as the UP Company Store in Omaha.

Which then brings up the question of, what ever happened to the Souvenir Car "Reed Jackson", formerly the "Sherman Hill"?

Hi Jack ,

The Reed Jackson along with the Lynn Nystrom where safe and in the Steam Shop when Mary Nystrom
Gave me and 3 of my New Zealand friends a tour on Oct 16, 2015 .
I still think it would be a great tribute 2 Lynn Nystrom to put the flag decals on the sides
Of the Lynn Nystrom.

Gandy Dancer Video has long since folded when George retired. Steve Watrous, myself and Bill Waldrop would create the masters and George would produce the tapes from them. I was a fun project for all of us.

I have the Wyoming Division quartet Gandy Dancer put out around 1990; 8 hours total.  I still break them out every now and then, and converted the tapes to DVD years ago.  What at the time was a look at the latest around is now a fond look back at "those days."

Gandy Dancer also did a tape on Frisco 1522 as well as the two UP steam tapes.  I know I've seen it, but I can't seem to find it around anywhere.  I was recording sound and taking photos the day much of that tape was shot, and I'd love to find a copy of it somewhere too.
