This Ancient Steam Power Is Surrounded By More Modern Means!
Author: LoggerHogger

The date is June 23, 1953 and Virginia & Truckee 2-4-0 #21, the "J.W. Bowker" finds herself many miles away from her original home in the desert in Carson City, Nevada.

Yes, that is is the 1875 Baldwin built engine stopped at the foot of Market Street in San Francisco under the shadow of the Ferry Building.  She is taking part in a special Argonaut Days celebration in the hear of The City.

Needless to say the contrast in transportation styles over the 75 years since she was built is quite evident in this fine photo taken by Ted Wurm.

I haven't seen this photo in decades. What a surprise seeing it must have been seeing a steam locomotive on Muni's streetcar tracks. I love the old White bus, too.

That was post-abandonment.  I see the trolley wire has already been removed, too.

Then what are all of the overhead wires for electic busses?  Have seen that in other cities so that could be one on the right?
