Decisions about when and how far to run a fire patrol (or a rock patrol ahead of the train in wet weather) are made on a daily basis based on conditions. With the fickle weather in the San Juans, it's perfectly possible to be running a fire patrol behind a train one day and a rock patrol ahead of it the next--that happened this week, for example.
