Steam & Excursion > Reading & Northern #425 Charges Towards Mt Top, PA

On a brutally hot Sunday in July, Reading & Northern's 4-6-2 #425 was tasked with pulling a special trip for the Rotary Club of Mountain Top, PA - a round-trip excursion from the club's namesake town down to Jim Thorpe and return - with a 3+ hour layover for passengers to get off and explore the town.  While the trip down from Mountain Top to Jim Thorpe is downhill (imagine that!), the return trip going up the grade promised to be a show - and sure enough, it was.  I set up my cameras at two locations - first, in Glen Onoko, just outside of Jim Thorpe in the Lehigh Gorge State Park, as #425 charges up through a rock cut to wind its way northward along the Lehigh River.  The second shot you'll see is at the north portal of White Haven Tunnel, just outside of the town of White Haven, PA.  This is a shot I've wanted for a while, and have always missed getting it, until now.  Enjoy!

You almost captured a scene like we saw in "Stand By Me" with the swimmers on the bridge.  I'm not familiar with the area, is this a portion of someone's main (or old main)?  Are there other trains on this line?

This is the former Lehigh Valley Main Line from New York City to Buffalo,Ny Via the Lehigh river valley. The main is that of the Reading & Northern and also th4e NS Lehigh Line. Yes there are train on it all the time.This is in Eastern Pa Getting into the Poconos.

I had the same thought! I was wondering if was going to race the train until he bailed.

Engine sounded great working up that grade. Nicely shot!
