Almost American Freedom Train... but not quite
Author: webmaster

Old film of 4449 on its way south with cab footage. I am not going to bother putting in descriptions as I will probably get it wrong. I will let the people that were there comment.

Hey --That is a great video!  And rare, too.
LOVE seeing the 4449 -- the Queen of Steam --
in action on the main line --  where she belongs,
and on a long rip, which is what she was built to do.
THanks, Todd - this video is a real treat.

Looks like this may be the trip down from Portland to Sacramento and then east to meet the train in 1975? Some cool Dunsmuir area scenes in the canyon including Cantara.

That would be a youthful Doyle McCormick.

I concur. I have slides from this move ... two SP business cars accompanied 4449 on the ride....

Very nice footage. Nice to see Al Philips teaching Ed Immel how to fire.

Ha! That IS Ed! No kidding, I was going to guess Ed Immel, but he looks so young as compared to Doyle & Al!
Ah, youth...

I remember seeing the 4449 in Sac for the first time in 75 on her first stop after these movies were taken. Thinking about it today, when this happened, was this the first SP steam on SP rails since the fires were dropped in the mid 50's? The footage contains a bunch of locations in the Dunsmuir area from Mott down the Sacramento river canyon to the Pit river bridge. With the ORHF http://www.orhf.org/ celebrating the the 40 year anniversary of the American Freedom Train staff reunion September 16-18, 2016 next month, this footage came to light just in time. I'm sure they would enjoy this...

correction........according to Ed's wife Rachel...this is not Ed Immel.   Ed is not a TO subscriber so it took a while.    Arlen
