Don't Forget - Daylight Locomotives Came In All Different Sizes!
Author: LoggerHogger

When we think of the famous Daylight trains of the Southern Pacific, we naturally recall them being headed by sleek and streamlined GS-Class 4-8-4 engines built by the Lima Locomotive works.  However, these were not the only steam locomotives to power the trains called "Daylight".

In 1946 SP added what was known as the "Sacramento Daylight" as train number 53 and 54.  This train was the Sacramento section of the Oakland to Los Angeles San Joaquin Daylight.  The Sacramento cars for this train were cut out at Lathrop, CA where this photo was taken by Guy L. Dunscomb in August 1947.

A pair of A-6 Atlantic type engines, #3000 and #3001 were rebuilt and painted specially for this abbreviated Daylight train.  While not as streamlined as their big GS Daylight engines, these Atlantic's still were striking in their Daylight inspired paint.

Nice compact power.  Booster to get the train rolling and then those drivers to really roll em.

Or how about the 3000 at Port Costa!
He said came in different sizes, just wasn't very specific.

I wish the one at Travel Town in Los Angeles would be repainted in the Daylight scheme.

The one in Travel Town is an A3, only the A6's received Daylight paint.  There are several spotting differences too between the locomotives.

Thanks for the clarification, not an SP modeler.

Is the large pipe in front of the stack the exhaust from a booster?

Is that an express boxcar behind the 3000?

There were also some P class 4-6-2 engines that were also painted in daylight colours as well as some 4-8-2 MT class engines.

The Sunbeam, and fast Dallas-Houston train, was painted in The Daylight scheme and was pulled
by a daylight skirted and painted 4-6-2 pacific type
