During The Last Runs Of This Famous Line This Spot Became Famous!
Author: LoggerHogger

Some railroads were blessed with the ability to run a number of excursions for visiting railfans in the years leading up to their abandonment.  The Virginia & Truckee out of Carson City Nevada was one such line that went out of business in a well documented fashion.

With the Virginia City line being pulled up for scrap in 1941 all the last excursions leading up to the end in May 1950 were run between Reno and Minden.  This allowed for fans to photograph the trains as they exited the Washoe Canyon just before entering Washoe City.  This little trestle that we see here with V&T #26 and her short train became a favorite jumping off spot for run-bys.

Here we see the conductor has come over to the "camera side" of the train to watch the run-by unfold.  Soon even these trips would be no more as the rail on the "Silver Shortline" was finally pulled.  For the next many decades only the trestle would be left to remind us of the famous trains that once ran through this desert canyon.

You can't imagine how much I enjoy these posts of yours. While the photos are first class, the explanations of the story behind the photo raises your posts to an even higher level. Thank you.

Much of that little trestle survived into the 21st Century on the right of 395 and off to the left
could be seen the straight run across the Meadow. Really too bad the line didn't survive a bit
longer.

Didn't a few of the wooden trestle's and maybe that one in the picture burn a few years back in a brush fire? I hope not.

Last couple times I've driven the new Interstate link, look forward to that in a wind driven snow storm! Might be
good reason to drop down and check out what's left of the bridge.

Does this location still exist, or is it buried under the new freeway?

The location is still there but the trestle burned just a couple years ago.
